Beautiful Hanauma Bay on the southeast coast of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu draws millions of visitors each year – and for good reason! Hanauma Bay is one of Hawaii’s absolute best areas for scuba diving and snorkeling. You’ll get an up-close look at all the beautiful marine life here.
Hanauma Bay is on the same island as some favorite tourist areas – Waikiki, Honolulu, Diamond Head, and more. For travelers staying on popular Waikiki beach, Hanauma Bay shuttles are available to take you on day trips over to the bay. Once there, you can explore the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve at your leisure!
You can expect to see upwards of 400 different kinds of fish in Hanauma Bay if you’re lucky. The bay is particularly known for its population of parrotfish and green sea turtles, which look absolutely beautiful coasting through the bright blue waters.
Hanauma Bay is an official protected Nature Preserve and also a Marine Life Conservation District. That means there are laws to protect the bay. Visitors may not mistreat or harm any marine animals and also may not have any contact with any coral heads, which are often found on the sea floor. You must remember to be very careful while snorkeling or scuba diving here!
Hanauma Bay operates from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and entrance into the Nature Preserve costs $7.50 per person. Admission is free for children under 12, residents of Hawaii, and those with a military ID.
The best way to explore Hanauma Bay is by shuttle – you’ll get picked up at your hotel, taken to the bay, and returned back to your hotel in the same day. The best thing about it is all you have to do is sit back for the ride and have fun!
You have lots of companies to choose from for your Hanauma Bay shuttle. You’ll have the most options if you’re staying in Waikiki, since most companies run shuttles from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay. Some companies even provide snorkeling equipment! Depending on the companies and everything that’s included in the shuttle package, you can expect to pay between 10 to 20 dollars per person. In sometimes-pricey Hawaii, that’s an awesome deal.
